Questions: Poetry corner
Why am I in this world? Why are you?
Why are our souls interlinked, and not just plain two?
Why did your parents come here, to these rocky shores?
Why did they decide to stay here for more?
Why did our paths cross, that odd day?
Why were you there when I went out to play?
Why were you there when I was sad and alone?
Or play with me at recess with balls and sticks and stones?
Why were you there when we grew older?
And you gave me the cold shoulder.
Why did you come of age, and leave me on these rocky shores?
And leave me to date these boys, who were all total bores.
Why did you come back, with children and a wife,
Why did you believe I didn’t take it all in strife?
Why did you expect me to love you again, even through my pain?
I went about without you, for more time than before,
And every day that passed, hurt me even more.
Why did you move away again, claiming it was “work?”
I knew you just wanted to get away from me, you arrogant jerk.
Why did I get married to your enemy, just to cause you shame?
Why then did you call me, knowing you were to blame?
Ten years later, I’m a widow with a daughter, who asks me if she can date.
And I remember that odd day, in 1998.
